The most widely used basic insulation method is the **"wrapping method"**. In this method, the foundation is enclosed like a package with a waterproofing membrane layer. The insulation layer is applied before the foundation is placed, and the foundation is seated inside this protective layer. Thus, water is prevented from reaching the building.

The wrapping method not only provides waterproofing; it also prevents corrosion of reinforcements, cracking of concrete, and moisture-related structural damage. Especially in regions with high ground moisture, it is an indispensable insulation solution for modern buildings.

ESEM Yapı Foundation and Terrace Insulation Applications

ESEM Yapı offers solutions that extend the life of the structure and provide high protection against water and moisture ingress by using the wrapping method in foundation insulation applications. During the application process, a smooth-surfaced blinding concrete layer is first prepared, on which the bituminous membrane layer will be laid. Then, at least two layers of 3–4 mm thick membrane with polyester felt carrier are adhered onto this layer.

The membranes are applied by melting with a torch, with 10 cm transverse and 15 cm longitudinal overlap on the first layer. The second layer is fully adhered onto the first layer and laid with a 50 cm horizontal and 5 meter longitudinal offset. No offset at right angles is made in the application; full surface adhesion is the principle. Additionally, approximately 1 meter of excess membrane is left at the edges to ensure integrity with the foundation wall insulation.

For foundation wall insulation, either the same type of membrane can be used, or polyester felt-reinforced liquid membranes offer a more practical and faster application. After application, it is recommended to cover the membranes with at least 100 g/m² geotextile felt to protect them from physical damage. Chamfering at all vertical corner joints is of great importance for the continuity of the insulation.
